System Restore disabled by Group Policy

In case you find that System Restore has been disabled by Group Policy do this.
Please note that you may have a virus or at least you had a virus in the past which disabled your system restore. In fact the virus does just to disable your interface with the system restore keeping it active for virus files storage.
In the most cases I found this problem on windows XP.

1. Click Start, Run and type regedit.exe and press Enter

2. Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ SystemRestore

In the right-pane:

* Delete the value DisableConfig
* Delete the value DisableSR

3. Exit the Registry Editor.

In Windows XP Professional, you can accomplish the above using Group Policy Editor as well.

1. Click Start, Run and type GPEDIT.MSC

2. Navigate to this path:

-> Computer Configuration
--> Administrative Templates
---> System
----> System Restore

3. Set Turn off System Restore to Not Configured

4. Set Turn off Configuration to Not Configured
More Information

Turn off System Restore corresponds to DisableSR registry value. With this Policy is turned ON, the System Restore tab may be missing in My Computer Properties. Also, when you run System Restore (rstrui.exe), you receive this message:

System Restore has been turned off by group policy. To turn on System Restore, contact your domain Administrator.

Turn off Configuration corresponds to DisableConfig registry value. With this Policy turned ON, the System Restore tab will remain displayed but the user cannot configure the SR options. It reads disabled by Group Policy.

Or perhaps you can review this
Control of System Restore function has been disabled by "Group Policy".
How do regain control?Go to Start>Run, key in gpedit.msc and hit ENTER. Under Computer
Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, expand System, then click on
the System Restore folder. In the right-hand pane, double-click on Turn off
Configuration and, under the Setting tab, click in the radio button beside
Not Configured. Click on Apply then OK.

Note: You must be an administrator or owner, or have administrative

Undo the changes using Group Policy Editor (Gpedit.msc)

In the right-pane, delete the value "DisableConfig".
Close Registry Editor
Close and re-open the System Restore properties page.

Disabled Connect using a broadband connection PPOE

Some days ago I found that the Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and password option in the New Connection Wizard was unavailable.
As a result, was not able to create a PPPoE connection to the Internet.

After lots of spend hours searching the net for a solution I figured out what's the problem. It worked in my case.
It was not about damaged registry values or bad driver. The only thing I needed to do was to put back the Telephony Service from Windows Services on automatic and start it.

This was happening because I disabled some windows services some days before this to happen.

I hope this will save some time for you.

Having Office 2007 and 2003 together in the same windows installation

Especially power users, have more than one version of Office installed on their computers. I will show you how to configure your office installation so you can use both office 2003 and 2007 together so you won't see Windows Installer messages when switching between different versions of Word or Excell.

This will force a particular version of Word to not claim the file extensions back.

First of all you have to install first the oldest version of office (eg. Office 2003).
Then inslall the newer version of Office (eg. Office 2007) clicking on customize instead of upgrade.

The main trick comes now:
1. Close all opened Word windows.
2. Open Word 2007 and let the setup run (if it appears), then close Word.
3. Open the registry editor and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Options
4. Add a DWORD named NoRereg set to 1

Note: 11.0 refers to Word 11, which is Word 2003. Word 2007 is Word 12. To make Word 2003 the default and not 2007, use the same steps but interchange 2003 and 2007, as well as 11.0 and 12.0

Yahoo messenger not showing text in chat box

Here’s a solution which will almost certainly solve your problem. Click: START
Click: RUN
Type: REGEDIT
PRESS ENTER
Locate: HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Internet Settings > Zones >
Youll see a number of folders numbered: 0 1 2 3 etc
Above these you might see another folder there, before that zero folder, with a box type character - delete that .
Now close and Restart Your Pc everything should be fine.
If not, try uninstalling Messenger and then doing the above then reinstalling
Hope this cures your problem and let me know.

Script to Restore Internet Explorer on Windows 7 Desktop

Windows 7 does not have the original Internet Explorer icon on desktop. There is a trick to have it back and there is how:

If you just want the IE icon back, all you need to do is to open Notepad and paste into a new document the text from the box below.

Save the file as "restore IE on Windows 7.REG".

Open the folder where you saved the file and then double click on "restore IE on Windows 7.REG" file. If asked that you agree to merge some values to registry you must answer yes.

Finally refresh your desktop and you will your new Internet Explorer icon on your windows 7 desktop.

Restore Internet Explorer Icon on Windows 7 Desktop

Microsoft removed this feature to comply with all the legal battles they’ve had, and their alternate suggestion is to create a standard shortcut to iexplore.exe on the Desktop, but it’s not the same thing. We’ve got a registry hack to bring it back.

Launch Regedit.exe using the Start Menu search box, and then navigate to the following location:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT CLSID {871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}

Right-click on the key on the left-hand pane, choose Export, and save it to a .REG file (say, ie-guid.reg)
Open up the REG file using Notepad…
From the Edit menu, click Replace, and replace every occurrence of the following GUID string

{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}

… with a custom GUID string, such as:

{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30301D}

Save the REG file and close Notepad, and then double-click on the file to merge the contents to the registry. Either re-open the registry editor, or use the F5 key to reload everything with the new changes (this step is important).

Now you can navigate downto the following registry key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT CLSID {871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30301D} Shellex ContextMenuHandlers ieframe

Double-click on the (default) key in the right-hand pane and set its data as:

{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}

With this done, press F5 on the desktop and you’ll see the Internet Explorer icon on windows 7 desktop.

The icon appears incomplete without the Properties command in right click menu, so keep reading.

Final Registry Hack Adjustments

Click on the following key, which should still be viewable in your Registry editor window from the last step.

Double-click LocalizedString in the right-hand pane and type the following data to rename the icon.

Internet Explorer

Select the following key:

Press F5 to refresh the Desktop, and here is how the Internet Explorer icon would look like, finally.

That’s it! It only took 24 steps, but you made it through to the end—of course, you could just download the registry hack and get the icon back with a double-click.

The Popup Favorites

I was curious and verified the popup favorites problem. On mu computer the favorites pop up small rectangles of about 2x0.5 inch.
The popups disappear imediately on moving out the mouse.

As Google Webmaster Central Blog said on Wednesday, April 14, 2010, the webmaster tools product has now a new feature, giving to the user the ability to see charts and more detail on each individual search query.

Now, with a single click on a given search query you can see the number of impressions, and clickthrough data for each position the search query appeared on all google searches.

Also the number of site's queries is greatly enlarged, in fact you will see pagination at the bottom of the page. Before only the top 100 site's queries were used for the data provided.

The Silicon Valley internet company revealed today that the commission has sent out formal questionnaires seeking information about complaints from three firms – the British price comparison site Foundem, a French legal search engine called eJustice and a shopping site, Ciao, which is owned by microsoft.

Although the commission's investigation is only at a tentative stage, the fact that Brussels is taking the issue seriously is likely to set off alarm bells at Google.

Julia Holtz: "We are confident that our business operates in the interests of users and partners, as well as in line with European competition law."

The European complaints are merely the latest in a series of critiques of Google's position. Thousands of authors have been battling plans by Google to digitise the contents of millions of books. In Italy, prosecutors are challenging Google's YouTube video website on the grounds of invasion of privacy. And newspapers in countries including Germany have attacked the free use of their content on Google News.

Google Accused of anti-competitive practices

TradeComet.com accused Google of manipulating its system for setting ad rates to make it too expensive for a specialty search engine called SourceTool to promote itself within Google's vast online marketing network.

Google said it hadn't reviewed the allegations as of late Tuesday, but the Mountain View, California-based company reiterated its belief that there are plenty of other online advertising options, including networks run by rivals Yahoo and Microsoft.

TradeComet's lawsuit is the latest legal action to allege Google has used its widening market power to create a monopoly that enables it to bully rivals or squeeze out websites that it doesn't like.

Google processes nearly two-thirds of the internet search requests in the United States and sells an even larger chunk of the text-based ad links that appear alongside search results and other content on millions of web pages served up each day.

New York-based TradeComet alleges Google stymied the growth of SourceTool in May 2006 when it raised the minimum bids on SourceTool ads that were triggered by specific search requests. Words that resulted in advertising costs of 5 cents and 10 cents per click soared to $US5 and $US10 per click, according to the suit.

TradeComet said its traffic plunged by 90 per cent after Google imposed its new pricing terms.

A dynamic Web page is a template that displays specific information in response to queries. Most of the page content comes from the database connected to the Web site. I had the same problems too, but after some hours of digging I found the solution.

You must trick your system to recognize your sound card

First go to www.creative.com in the support section. Download the drivers for your sound card.
Please note that you don't need to find drivers for EMU10K1 but for your entire sound card.

Because Creative Sound cards provide the Game Port there is a conflict in your operating system about this port. The Creative Sound Card (EMU10K1) wants to create the Game port but the interrupt is already occupied by your Standard Game Port.

Go in bios - for almost all the mainboards you have to hit DEL or F2 at system startup to see the bios. In here search for game port and disable it. Save the settings and let windows restart.

After windows logon you will see that windows starts to see new devices. If not, launch the programs from creative which will install the drivers.

This is simple. I just needed 2-3 hours to figure it out.

Last week I received a message telling me that I got an Google adwords promo code coupon. This is great. I received 100 Euro to use with Google Adwords.
If you are curious the code from the coupon was similar to BKG7-3P6U-2B6H-ERTH-UC.
Searching through Google help I found out that the offer expires in 14 days so if you are lucky and receive message from Google that you got a promo code coupon act quickly.
The promo code must be inserted into a field which has the message "Have you received a coupon with a promotional code from us? If so, you may enter that code here."
Many internet users post on blogs or web pages the promo codes they received and let you try them. Don't let the fool you because surely they already used that promo code coupon. I think no one will post his promo code coupon without using it first.
Anyway if you try to use one of those code you will receive a message telling you that "This promotional code has already been redeemed". It means that the promo code was already used.
Sorry that you lost time searching for free promo code coupon but there is nothing like this searching the net. Only Google or some partners send those promo code coupons.

Google Adwords Ad Under Review

Searching for a response to one of my problems I found something that may be of interest for some of you.

Q. Why is my ad still under review?
"My ad has been under review for nearly 3 weeks now. I would like to know what's the status for approving my ad and if there are anything that I might need to change. Thanks".

A. "I checked with support and it looks as if your ads were approved this morning. In most cases the process is much faster because its automated- but when ads require manual review, it can take a bit longer. Thanks for your patience"

My opinion:
Most adwords users suggest to change the add instead waiting for someone to review it. The fact is that there is a routine that checks for some words which trigger human verification.

Robots.txt

The robots.txt file is a set of instructions for visiting robots (spiders) that index the content of your web site pages. For those spiders that obey the file, it provides a map for what they can, and cannot index. The file must reside in the root directory of your web. The URL path (web address) of your robots.txt file should look like this...

Definition of the above robots.txt file:

User-agent: *
The asterisk (*) or wildcard represents a special value and means any robot.

Disallow:
The Disallow: line without a / (forward slash) tells the robots that they can index the entire site.

Any empty value, indicates that all URLs can be retrieved. At least one Disallow field needs to be present in a record without the / (forward slash) as shown above.

The presence of an empty "/robots.txt" file has no explicit associated semantics, it will be treated as if it was not present, i.e. all robots will consider themselves welcome.

The Disallow: line without the trailing slash (/) tells all robots to index everything. If you have a line that looks like this:

Disallow: /private/

It tells the robot that it cannot index the contents of that /private/ directory.

You should validate your robots.txt file. Enter the full URI to the robots.txt file on your server. The robots.txt file always resides at the root level of your web.

Would Google pay attention on rel=nofollow in an iframe ?

There are some interesting factors around this question. First, the src attribute of an iframe element is not technically a link. For years, a src attribute didn't seem to transfer anything, according to my tests. Then Google began to use it for url discovery.

More recently some reports have been coming it that the url containing the iframe is sometimes reported as a link in Webmaster Tools. I haven't seen this myself, but I have no reason to think it doesn't happen. I've yet to notice a report of it ever showing up in the link: operator results - but those are so flighty that I'm not surprised.

The accepted values of the rel attribute (according to the W3C) show a link relationship for an anchor element's href url - and a src attribute is not, technically an anchor. The W3C recognizes 15 link relationships, but as of the moment "nofollow" is not one of them.

Another interesting bit about how Google evaluates a src attribute is the fact that so-called "hotlinked" images are sometimes reported in Webmaster Tools as backlinks.

All of that is just background for the question - the practice of using nofollow in an iframe. Google has said nothing official about this that I know of. Some people are experimenting with it, and I've even seen some recommending it. But I've seen no results that prove link juice is even sent through a src attribute, to say nothing of being stopped by a renegade rel=nofollow.

So all of that is frustratingly inconclusive. It certainly can't hurt to include a non-standard attribute, but whether it stops any PR transfer is not at all clear - as is the question of whether there is PR transfer in the first place.

Google, Yahoo, MSN Unite On Support For Nofollow Attribute For Links
In the first cooperative move for nearly ten years, the major search engines have unveiled a new indexing command for web authors that they all recognize, one that they hope will help reduce the link and comment spam that plagues many web sites, especially those run by bloggers.
The new "nofollow" attribute that can be associated with links was originated as an idea by Google several weeks ago and pitched past MSN and Yahoo, as well as major blogging vendors, gaining support.
The Nofollow Attribute
The new attribute is called "nofollow" with rel="nofollow" being the format inserted within an anchor tag. When added to any link, it will serve as a flag that the link has not been explicitly approved by the site owner.
For example, this is how the HTML markup for an ordinary link might look:
a href="http://www.site.com/page.html"
This is how the link would look after the nofollow attribute has been added, with the attribute portion shown in bold
a href="http://www.site.com/page.html" rel="nofollow"
This would also be acceptable, as order of elements within the anchor tag makes no difference:
a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.site.com/page.html"
Once added, the search engines supporting the attribute will understand that the link has not been vetted in some way by the site owner. Think of it as a way to flag to them, "I didn't post this link -- someone else did."
By the way, should you be one of the few using other types of rel attributes within your links (a way to show the relationship between your page and the page you're linking to), Google advises that you should separate them with spaces.
For example, Google cited this page, which provides one example of multiple rel attributes in action, like this:
a href="http://jane-blog.example.org/" rel="sweetheart date met"
If you wanted to add nofollow to the existing one, you'd just put a space between it and the other attributes of sweetheart, date and met, like this:
a href="http://jane-blog.example.org/" rel="sweetheart date met nofollow"
Google also said upper or lower case is usage of the attribute is fine and that the creation of this new attribute is believed to meet W3C standards on markup, as they allow for anyone to create new attributes.
Causes Of Link Spam
Why would you want to use the attribute? Blog publishers, forum operators, sites with guest books and others who allow anyone to contribute in some way to their web sites have suffered when people have used these systems to spam them with links.
For search engine purposes, getting a link to your site from someone else's site can serve as a "vote" that your site is seen as good. In Googlespeak, getting a link increases the PageRank value of your page -- sometimes a tiny bit, sometimes much more.
In addition, getting a link may help better ensure that your page is indexed by the major search engines. Finally, getting a link with words you want to be found for embedded in the anchor text can help you not just be seen as popular but also help you rank better for particular words.
Google, nevertheless, often gets the blame -- which is why it was under the most pressure for coming up with something for the problem. The hope is that by allowing web authors to flag links in this manner, it will make blogs, forums, guest books and other places accepting contributions less attractive to spamming.
What Nofollow Means
Below I'll cover what Google says it does, if it sees a link with the nofollow attributed associated with it. Yahoo and MSN are likely to react in a similar fashion, though I haven't yet spoken with them to get exact details since news of their support only just emerged.
If Google sees nofollow as part of a link, it will:
NOT follow through to that page.
NOT count the link in calculating PageRank link popularity scores.
NOT count the anchor text in determining what terms the page being linked to is relevant for.
That's the situation at the moment. Google is going to evaluate how the attribute works, and it could decide to make other changes down the line, it says.
Now let's look at the impact of each action:
1) Not following the link to the page it points at means that potentially, Google might not index the page at all. As said, the more links that point at a particular page, the more likely it is that Google (and generally the other major search engines) will include that page within its index.
The nofollow attribute DOES NOT mean that someone will prevent a page they do not actually control from being indexed, however. If Google finds even one ordinary link pointing at a page, it may then index that page.
In addition, people can submit their pages directly to Google (and most major search engines). So it's crucial to understand that just because someone might place nofollow in a link pointing at your site, this WILL NOT prevent your page from getting indexed.
2) As for PageRank calculations, it's important to remember that PageRank is a pure popularity score (other search engines have similar scoring mechanisms, just not catchy names other than Yahoo's Web Rank). The nofollow attribute means that a link will not be counted as a "vote" in this popularity contest. That can have an impact on ranking, in cases where the impact of other factors beyond pure popularity come into play.
Huh? Say there are two pages, one with a PR score of 6, the other a PR of 7. Even though the PR7 page is more popular from a link counting point of view, it could still get outranked by the PR6 page if other factors such as the words on the page, or the anchor text pointing at the PR6 page, make it more relevant for a particular search.
It's also important to note that nofollow DOES NOT mean you are flagging a link as being bad in some way. Google isn't going to say, "Aha -- nofollow is on this link -- that's a bad link." Or as Matt Cutts, a Google software engineer who helped develop the attribute, said:
"It doesn't mean that it is a bad link, or that you that you hate it, just that this link doesn't belong to me."
Instead, nofollow effectively will cause Google to ignore the link, to pretend it doesn't exist. This also means you shouldn't worry that people will link to you and use nofollow as a way to hurt you -- Google says that won't happen.
3) This leads to anchor text. Generally much more important in ranking well for a particular term is to get the words you want to rank well for put into a link that points at you. With nofollow added to a link, Google won't associate the anchor text in the link with the page the link is pointed at. This, more than anything else, will sour things for link spammers.
Stop Spam? No. A Start, Yes!
The new attribute won't stop link spamming. Many people may still spam simply because they hope human beings will see the links, click through and perhaps convert. As with email spam, maybe only an incredibly tiny number will do so. But since there's no heavy cost to the spamming, that might still be enough.
In particular, much blog spamming is done through automation. So even with the new system in place, some of that automation will keep rolling along. It will no doubt even evolve to spot blogs and other areas that aren't making use of the nofollow attributes, just as smart spammers currently focus on blogs that have been abandoned, rather than irritating active bloggers.
This means other types of systems of blocking spam will likely still have to be used, such as forcing people to input characters from graphics (captchas), registration and so on (The Solution To Blog Spamming at ThreadWatch has a nice rundown on these, and also see Six Apart's Guide to Comment Spam).
While link or comment spamming isn't going away, it's still heartening that it will be less attractive. Site owners have been given an important new tool that lets them control indexing -- something they've not had offered for years. Perfect or not, I'm glad it's emerged.
Vendor Support
Google started developing the idea of a nofollow attribute several weeks ago and quietly shared it with a number of the major blogging vendors. Many of them have now signed on, pledging to support and implement the tag in the future, if they've not already done so now.
As a result, those using systems provided by one of the major vendors such as Blogger or Movable Type (see here for support news) should find that implementing the tags to be associated in links in comments is a matter of flipping a switch. OK, maybe clicking a radio button or drop-down box! Google provides a list of those supporting it here.
Google said it will soon begin talking with other companies, such as those that making forum software. But makers of these packages or any packages could implement support when they are ready.
Uses For The Attribute
The tag can be used by anyone anywhere, of course. It's not just for use with blog comment areas or forum posts. For example, Cutts said people might use it if they publish dynamically generated referrer stats and visitor information.
"Wherever it means that another person placed a link on your site, that would be appropriate," Cutts said.
Because of this, some page authoring tools will likely add support in the future, if it is widely adopted as will likely be the case. Some tools may allow adding it right now -- and those who know HTML code can do an easy insertion.
That might be handy if you need to link to a site but are worried that a search engine might consider it a "bad neighborhood," as they've often described them. In reality, the chances are very small that the typical person might link to a site that would actually hurt them with a search engine. But if in double, nofollow could offer peace of mind.
Of course, those who are swapping links with other sites now have a whole new thing to look out for. If someone offers to link to you, you'll want to make sure they don't make use of the nofollow tag -- at least if you were hoping for some search engine gain. Otherwise, the link's not going to count.
Don't forget -- there are other good reasons to still get links even beyond search engines, of course. My Golden Rules Of Link Building article covers this more.
You definitely DO NOT want to use the attribute on links to your own pages. Do that, and you'll deprive your own pages from the chance of influencing how your other pages rank.
Having said this, I've no doubt some people will try playing with the new tag as a means to "hoard" PageRank that's passed on to only a few pages in your site. For example, your home page might link to 25 of your internal pages. Using the new attribute, you could exclude all but five of these pages. Do that, and you might possibly cause Google to give those five pages more credit (see the Link Building & Link Analysis article for Search Engine Watch members for more about this).
Maybe. Perhaps. And perhaps the search engines may make other changes down the line. Rather than get tricky with this tag, I'd recommend using it as intended for now -- as a means to flag that there are certain links on your web site that you didn't place there.
Support From Other Search Engines
How about the other search engines? MSN and Yahoo are onboard. In fact, Yahoo beat Google out of the gate in blogging its support of the new tag first. A Defense Against Comment Spam offers a few details, an example and news that the change will be implemented in the coming weeks.
As for MSN, Working Together Against Blog Spam explains how the company made a snap decision today to support the tag, though the idea was something it had considered during its Search Champs meetings with bloggers and search marketers several months ago. It promises that its crawler will begin respecting the attribute in the coming weeks.
Google, of course, has been onboard from the start. It provides more details on its blog in Preventing comment spam.
So how about Ask Jeeves, the remaining major crawler? They're still looking at the new option and weighing it up.
"We'll consider it for the future, but because we use local [link] popularity and not global popularity, we are not going to rush into anything today. It has more impact for Google and Yahoo because of their similar methodologies. The upside for us is much more modest," Lanzone said.
By local popularity, Ask Jeeves is referring to how its Teoma search engine will calculate the popularity of pages and do ranking only after culling a subset of pages deemed relevant, rather than looking at all links from across the entire web. My Make Room For Teoma article explains this more.

Content is King

The golden rule on the internet is: content is king.

The same applies with SEO.

Search engines love content. Their purpose of a search engine is to provide its users with relevant content.

The more content you write and provide, the more of your pages will be indexed by the search engines. The more pages you have indexed in the search engines, the more you will show up in the SERPs. The more you show up in the SERPs, the more search engine traffic you get.

Thus, even if you don't know any SEO, you can simply just keep working on your content. Eventually, it will all pay off.

The trend is also going more and more towards "long-tail keywords." These are keywords that are impossible to target. They are often phrases that users will search. However, due to the nature in which users search on search engines, they may search "cook turkey how to" instead of "how to cook turkey." This would be an example of a long-tail keyword.

Another example would be "turkey cook oven how long." Obviously, it's impossible to target all of these long-tail keywords. As long as a similar phrase appears in your content, you should rank for those long-tail keywords. On average, long-tail keywords account for 80% of an established website's search engine traffic. This is why content is the most important part of any SEO campaign!

External Backlinks

External backlinks are arguably the most focused-on aspect of SEO. Backlinks (or "inbound links") are a fundamental pillar of search engine optimization. As previously mentioned in this tutorial, on-page optimization is limited in scope -- there is only so much you can do with on-page optimization. The rest of your rankings will rely heavily on your backlinks and how many pages are linking into your page.

How to Structure External Backlinks

It's best to make sure any site linking to you includes your desired keywords or keyphrase in its backlink.

For example, if you're targeting the key phrase "how to cook turkey" then your ideal backlink should read:

To obtain external backlinks, you can simply email other webmasters in your niche and ask to exchange links.

Don't forget that backlinks must be relevant. A dog site linking to your dog site will give your dog site a higher boost in the SERPs rather than a vegetable site linking to your dog site.

PageRank and "Link Juice"

"PageRank" (commonly abbreviated as "PR") is a patented algorithm developed by Google. In its most basic form, PageRank is a measure of link popularity. The more sites linking to your page, and the higher the PageRank and quality of those pages linking in, the higher your PageRank will be.

Higher PR backlinks will pass more "link juice." This means that single link will give you more PageRank and higher search rankings all in one package.

The more external links on the page that's linking to your website, the less linkjuice that page will pass to your site.

To check your PageRank, just download the Google Browser Toolbar.

PageRank is always being internally updated in Google's servers. However, the "toolbar PR" is only updated roughly every 3-4 months.

rel="nofollow" Attribute

Due to blogging phenomenon and the incessant spamming of blog comments with backlinks, major search engines have tried to fight back against link spam. Thus, the rel="nofollow" was developed. If a link is tagged with rel="nofollow" then that link does not provide any link juice nor SEO benefit. An example of how rel="nofollow" might be used is:

Internal Linking and Sitemaps

Internal linking is one of the most important factors of on-page search engine optimization.

In order for a search engine spider to "crawl" your website, your site needs a solid internal linking structure.

Search engine spiders "index" your website by following links. It doesn't magically know all the pages contained in your site. It reads the code of your pages, and every time it finds a link in your code, it will follow that link. Once it follows that link, it will search the code of that new page. If it finds links on that page, it will follow those links and so on.

Coding Obstacles to Avoid

Problems occur when a search engine spider cannot find your links. If a spider cannot find your links, the pages you linked to won't be indexed. If they aren't indexed, they won't show up in the SERPs -- resulting in you getting less or zero search traffic.

Common obstacles to search spiders include DHTML and Flash.

Avoid inserting your links into Flash animations whenever possible. It is completely impossible for a search engine to spider anything associated with Flash. You're welcome to use Flash animations -- just don't put your links there. Links should always be in plain-text/HTML.

The other problem is "DHTML" or "dynamic HTML." DHTML is not an official language but is used to describe the combination of HTML, Javascript, and other languages to make a website "dynamic" and "interactive." Dynamic menus may be appealing due to ease of use and aesthetics. Unfortunately, it's difficult for search engines to index these links. However, unlike Flash, it's not impossible for spiders to index these links. An example of a modern coding environment that's difficult for search engines to work with is AJAX.

Menus and Internal Linking

It's best to use text menus whenever possible. Place your most important links in your navigation bar.

Make sure none of your links are broken. Broken links are not indexed by search engines.

A standard text menu bar is easiest for search spiders. To increase the chances of your pages being indexed, use a sitewide menu bar.

Generally, your homepage will have the most "linkjuice." Linkjuice will be further in the external backlinks section, but the premise is: the more links you place on your homepage, the lower your rankings for each individual subpage linked on the homepage. Thus, it's best to only link your most important sections on your homepage and then link to subsections of those sections on the actual section pages versus the homepage. Linking every single page of your website on your homepage is not only ineffective but makes it difficult for the visitor to navigate.

To effectively get all your pages indexed without cluttering the homepage, we can use sitemaps.

Sitemaps

Sitemaps are a navigational tool for both users and search engine spiders.

Sitemaps are commonly found in the footer. Thus, you can place a sitewide link to your sitemap in your footer to make it easy for search engine spiders to find your sitemap. Once the spiders find your sitemap, it eases and expedites the process of indexing all your web pages.

A site map is -- plain and simple -- a page that contains links to every page on your website.

A site map is commonly split into "sections" to make it easier for the user to navigate.

Sitemaps are a powerful tool to get all your pages indexed in the search engines.

Filenames and Page URLs

The filenames and page URLs should include as many keywords as possible.

For example, a webpage on how to groom dogs could be named "how-to-groom-dogs.html"

Notice we used hyphens to separate the keywords. Legacy search engines do not work well with underscores ("_"); thus, to stay on the safe side, it's best to use hyphens as seperators.

Avoid using spaces as seperators or using no seperator at all. Search engines cannot magically seperate the words all the time. A hyphen helps it out.

Meta Keywords and Description Tag

In the dot com era, back when search engines such as Altavista, Lycos, and HotBot were popular, there was a lot of emphasis on the meta tags -- specifically, the "meta keywords" tag.

meta tags should go between your head tags. meta tags are commonly found after the title tags and before the /head tag.

The "meta keywords" tag looks like this:

META NAME="KEYWORDS" CONTENT="keywords,go,here,seperated,by,commas"

In the dot com era, it was common to "stuff" keywords into this tag to rank for more keywords. However, today, it's not effective and may even get you penalized on the search engines.

As a rule of thumb, pick 5-10 of your major keywords and use it in the meta keywords tag. It's even better if you use keywords that actually appear in your content.

Most major search engines no longer consider the meta keywords tag. However, if you want to rank for legacy search engines, it never hurts to add this antiquated tag.

Another important meta tag for SEO is the "meta description" tag. Unlike its cousin, the "meta keywords" tag, the "meta description" tag is still used today and can play a very important role in your on-page search engine optimization.

Besides the title tag, the meta description tag is the next most important tag when attracting visitors. Remember what we said? Just because you rank in the top 10 doesn't guarantee visitors will click on your link and visit your website. It's the job of your title and description tag to entice them to click.

The meta description tag also still plays a role in the ranking algorithm of modern-day search engines. This is not a tag to ignore.

The basic meta description tag looks like the following:

META NAME="DESCRIPTION" CONTENT="Your keyword-rich description of your website goes here"

As with any other tag relevant to SEO, your most important keywords should show up in your meta description tag. It's also important to remember that just like the title tag, search engines limit the length of text that shows up your meta description tag. Keep it short and sweet but enticing while keeping your important keywords and key phrases in there.

Keywords and HTML Tags

Now we get to the meat and potatoes of on-page optimization.

The following are all vital HTML tags to consider and experiment on for search engine optimization.

title Tag

The title tag plays a significant role in SEO. Not only should you construct a title with relevant keywords, but make sure your titles make sense. Even if you rank in the top 10 SERPs, does that mean searchers are guaranteed to click your link and visit your website? Absolutely not. Your most important keywords should be placed in the beginning of the title tag. Also, keep in mind, search engines limit the title tag. Try to construct a meaningful title with your most important keywords while keeping it short enough so your entire title is displayed in the SERPs.

Heading Tags (h1, h2, h3, etc.)

Other important elements in on-page SEO are the header tags. These include h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, and h6.

These tags are commonly used as headers and subheaders to split sections of content and make it easier for the reader.

The h1 tag carries the most weight in SEO. Likewise, the h6 tag carries the least weight but is still important.

Include your most important keywords in these header tags.

To avoid being flagged as "blackhat" or "spam," use the header tags for their intended purposes. For example, use h1 as the header for the largest sections, h2 for "sub-sections" of h1, and so forth.

Keyword Density

Keyword density is one of the factors of on-page search engine optimization.

Basically, keyword density is the ratio of the keyword's occurence in relation to the total number of words on the entire page.

For example, if your keyword is "dogs" and your the only content on your entire page reads "Dogs are wonderful creatures," then your keyword density for the keyword "dogs" would be 25%.

As a rule of thumb, keyword density should range anywhere from 3-7% for major keywords and 1-2% for minor keywords.

It's important to not write content for the search engines, but to write content for your users. Many SEO specialists make the mistake of writing content purely for the search engines. However, the purpose of ranking on the search engines is to attract visitors, correct? What's the point of search engine rankings if users are confused by your content and simply leave?

It's also vital to understand that pages should not be written for keyword density. If your keyword density is too high (i.e. 90%), it can come off as "spam." If a page is flagged as spam, it won't appear in the search engine results. Don't be too scared though. An example of spammy behavior would be targeting the word "dogs" and repeating "dogs, dogs, dogs" and so forth rather than constructing meaningful sentences. As long as you're writing something half-meaningful, you'll probably be able to pass.

If a page is written naturally (and not for the search engines), you don't have to worry about keyword density too much.

As best practice, it's always great to write the content first, and then go back to make edits if keyword density is of any concern.

Keyword Research

Before embarking on your SEO campaign, the most important step is keyword research.

Keyword research is, in essence, identifying the "goals" of your search engine optimization campaign. If you don't know which keywords or keyphrases to be targeting, how will you know how to proceed?

As mentioned in our keywords and keyphrases article, as a rule of thumb, the shorter a key phrase, the easier it is to optimize for. Conversely, easier keyphrases generally receive less traffic. As cited in our previous article, it's easier to rank for "turkeys" than it is to rank for "stocks."

In our how search engines rank sites article, we also discussed how search engines do not publicly reveal how they rank their results. Given this case, how do we find keywords or keyphrases to target if we don't know how much traffic our target keywords will bring in? We could waste months of work and get zero traffic!

Luckily, there are statistics tools out there to help us.

Popular tools include the Google Keyword Tool and the Google Traffic Estimator.

The Google Keyword Tool allows you to type in any keyword or key phrase and it will generate a list of keyword ideas for you.

The Google Traffic Estimator gives you a rough approximation for the search volume of a particular keyword or keyphrase.

Keep in mind, the Traffic Estimator will only provide you an estimate. There is no sure-fire way of predicting the results for an SEO campaign.

Keywords and keyphrases are a fundamental pillar of SEO.

Essentially, keywords and key phrases are the words and phrases you type into the search engines when you perform a search.

It is imperative in search engine optimization to recognize which keywords to target, what phrases users are searching for, and so forth.

An example of a keyword would be "basketball." An example of a key phrase would be "how to shoot a basketball."

Generally speaking, the shorter a key phrase, the more search volume it will receive. Notable exceptions would be "real estate" (a two word phrase) versus, for example, "dogs." Likewise, certain keywords (such as "stocks") will be much more difficult to rank for than others (such as "turkey").

As a rule of thumb, the more traffic a keyword or key phrase can potentially generate, the more competitive it is.

It's important to identify the keywords and key phrases most popular in your website's niche or market. For example, it would be pointless for a website about "dogs" to optimize for a keyword like "lions." The searchers looking for "lions" would instantly leave (or not even arrive at all) to your website about "dogs." Thus, all your hard work would be wasted.

How Search Engines Rank Websites

All the major search engines rank differently.

A website or web page's rank in the search engines is known as the Search Engine Ranking Position (or "SERP" for short).

As explained in our previous article, "How Search Engines Work," search engines index web pages into a database. When users perform a search, the search engine goes through the index and returns results ranked in order of relevance. Thus, it's possible to be ranked #10 on MSN / Live but #974 on Google.

SERPs are determined by a ranking algorithm. A search engine's ranking algorithm is almost always kept private. If a search engine's ranking algorithm were publicized, it would be too easy to "game" the search engines.

The algorithms are responsible for sorting the results and ranking the relevance.

Through educated guesses and experimentation, search engine optimizers are able to develop a rough idea of how a search engine's ranking algorithm works. Thus, the practice of search engine optimization (or "SEO") was developed to artificially inflate the rankings of web pages on the search engines.

The three current largest search engines are Google, Yahoo, and MSN / Live Search. Since Google represents around 90% of the search engine market share, Google optimization will be the focus of this tutorial. However, Yahoo's ranking algorithms are closely identical to Google's, and Yahoo optimization will be discussed throughout as well. Together, these search engines represent a combined market share of around 95%.

On-Page Ranking Factors

On-page search engine ranking factors are the elements in a web page's code and structure that determine a page's relevance to search results. Common items include title tags, frequency of a keyword, and so on.

During the dot com era of the 90s, it was common for search engines to simply only use the "meta tags" to determine keywords. Search engines were much more primitive during the dot com era, and meta keyword tags presently carry little to no relevance when determining a website's SERPs.

Off-Page Ranking Factors

As its name implies, off-page ranking factors are any elements that influence a site's ranking which are "off" the website itself. The most common off-page ranking factor is inbound links (otherwise known as "backlinks" or "external links").

Since on-page ranking factors are limited in scope, a lot of SERPs are nowadays heavily influenced by off-page ranking factors such as external backlinks.

How Search Engines Work

Most modern search engines are "crawler"-based search engines.

A crawler-based search engine "crawls" or "spiders" the web. These types of search engines create their listings and rankings automatically.

When a search engine "crawls" or "spiders" your page, the process is known as "indexing." If a website or webpage is not indexed, it will not show up in search results no matter what. It's possible to have some pages of your site indexed while others are not indexed. This is usually due to improperly structured web pages or code. Depending on how often the individual page is updated, spiders may return to "re-index" the page every month to almost every day or hour. Re-indexing is the process in which search engines update their database about each page so it more accurately reflects the latest changes to a page's content, title, and so forth.

Sometimes, there can be a delay between the time a page is "spidered" versus the time it's "indexed." If a page is not indexed, it will not appear in search results. Thus, it's possible that a page can be "spidered," but not indexed.

Search Engine Software

Search engine software is what's presented to the end-user (you). The following are examples of search engine software:

The search engine software is what's responsible for displaying the search results on the web, but, more importantly, the software is what finds and ranks the search engine results. The software will pull data from the search engine's index or database and then return and sort these results based on what it thinks is most relevant to the end-user.

Differences Among Major Search Engines

The current major search engines are Google, Yahoo, and MSN/Live search. For the most part, these search engines are similar in foundation. They all collect data using the methods described above; however, their software and ranking algorithms are what set them apart. The reason you receive different results based on the search engine you use is due to the fact that search engines each rank differently and independently.
